There was a fatal accident involving a man trying to help a woman gain control of her minivan Wednesday (October 8, 2014) in Aurora, Illinois.

According to Aurora Police, the accident happened at approximately 10:10 a.m., as an 84-year-old woman (Joyce A. Baudouin) was attempting to back out of her driveway on South Buell Avenue.  In doing so, she lost control of her minivan.

According to a preliminary investigation, police said Baudouin first hit a 1998 Chevrolet Monte Carlo driven by a 20-year-old old Aurora man headed south on Buell. She then apparently hit the gas pedal instead of the brake while still in reverse , which sent her vehicle into two separate yards and back onto the roadway, police said.

After witnessing this chain of events, a man, identified as Dennis C. Hunke II, 51,of Plainfield, attempted to help Baudouin gain control of the minivan.  He ran toward the minivan and attempted to put his foot on the brake.  However, Baudouin apparently stepped on the accelerator, and Hunke hit the minivan’s door, causing him to fall backward.  In doing so, his head hit the pavement.

He was first taken to Presence Mercy Medical Center, then later flown to Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove.  According to the DuPage County Coroner’s Office, he died Friday evening.
