The crash is discussed in various media sources. An excerpt from the Kane County Connects post of April 19, 2018, titled “Driver Charged After Crashing SUV Into St. Charles Police Car, Injuring Officer.” An excerpt regarding the collision:
According to a city of St. Charles news release, the St. Charles officer was on patrol, driving south on Kirk Road at around 11:03 p.m. Tuesday (April 17, 2018), when he saw a Ford Explorer SUV driving north at a high rate of speed.
The officer turned around at Stern Avenue and went north, activating his emergency overhead lights. As the officer’s police car approached the intersection with Ohio Avenue, the driver of the Explorer turned left, eastbound, in front of the squad car, which was traveling through the intersection with the green light.
Both the police officer as well as the driver of the Explorer were taken to Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital for treatment of their accident injuries. The injuries were considered to be non-life threatening in nature.
The Illinois State Police (ISP) conducted the accident investigation with assistance from the St. Charles Police Department.
According to the Kane County Chronicle, in an April 18 article titled “Vehicle collision occurs between driver, St. Charles police officer” the driver of the Ford Explorer was identified as Eugenio Hernandez, 38, of West Chicago.
Hernandez was charged with driving with a suspended/revoked driver’s license, Failure to Yield while turning left at an intersection, and Failure to Yield to an emergency vehicle.
