Kane County Pedestrian Safety Initiative On Bliss Road

Pedestrian Safety Initiative In Kane County

Pedestrian accidents are notable in that they often lead to a range of serious injuries to those who have been hit by a vehicle.  As seen in posts on this site which summarize Kane County pedestrian accidents, many of these accidents either lead to serious accident injuries, including head injuries, and a substantial percentage of the injuries lead to fatalities.

There are various ways that pedestrian safety can be enhanced.  In some instances, such improvements to pedestrian safety happen after a pedestrian accident leads to serious injuries or a fatality to the person who has been hit by a vehicle.  Among these measures are the installation of cross walks, cross walks with flashing beacons, cross walk signs and other measures.

The October 26, 2017 Kane County Connects post titled “Cross Walk Warning System to Begin Installation on Bliss Road at the Virgil Gilman Trail This Week” discusses such an installation.  Two excerpts from the post:

Starting the week of Oct. 23, crews will be working on the installation of a pedestrian activated cross walk warning system on Bliss Road at the Virgil Gilman Trail crossing located just south of May Road.

also:

“We are doing this improvement to add visibility for the trail crossing at Bliss Road, which will result in a safer crossing,” Kane County Division of Transportation’s Heidi Files said.

Fatal Aurora Three Vehicle Crash On Orchard Road At I-88

Fatal Kane County Traffic Collision

Two men died and three other people were injured and hospitalized following a three-vehicle crash Monday morning (October 16, 2017) on Orchard Road at Interstate 88 (I-88) in Aurora.

The crash involved two vehicles, a Jaguar and GMC Envoy, colliding with a semi truck.

An excerpt regarding the crash, from the Kane County Connects post of October 17, 2017 titled “2nd Update Sheriff’s Office:  Fatal Crash At Orchard And I-88 Might Be Related To Shootings“:

According to a news release from Kane County Sheriff’s Office Administrative Director Pat Gengler, deputies responded at around 11:47 a.m. Monday (Oct. 16, 2017) to a report of a traffic crash with injuries.

The initial investigation indicates that a semi-tractor trailer driven by Semi-Sadam Elbu, 27, of Burbank was exiting eastbound I-88 and turning south onto Orchard Road, and two vehicles — a Jaguar driven by Serafin Castellanos, 38, of Aurora and a GMC Envoy driven by Christopher Shaw, 23, of North Aurora — were traveling north on Orchard Road, apparently at high rates of speed, when the accident took place.

As the semi was making the turn in the intersection, both vehicles struck the trailer portion of the semi. Castellanos, who was the sole occupant of the Jaguar, was transported to an Aurora-area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Shaw was pronounced dead at the scene.

In addition to Shaw’s death, the second man who died was identified as Devonte Bouchee, 24, of Aurora.  He was a passenger in the Envoy.  He died in the afternoon.

Three other people were injured and hospitalized.  They included the third occupant of the Envoy, the driver of the Jaguar, and the driver of the semi truck.

As further discussed in the Kane County Connects article, it is being investigated as to whether the collision was related to an earlier shooting.
