There was a car accident in Aurora on Sunday morning (June 19, 2016) after which a man died after the car he was in went into a retention pond. The accident happened during what was has been described as one man giving another man a driving lesson.
According to a preliminary accident investigation, the accident happened at approximately 7:55 a.m. in the 300 block of Marshall Avenue.
An excerpt from the June 20, 2016 Batavia Patch article titled “Aurora Man Dies After Weekend Crash Into Retention Pond“, referring to Dawa Tamang, 48, of Aurora:
According to the investigation so far, Tamang was apparently teaching a 33-year-old male relative how to drive in a 2010 Nissan Maxima. It appeared the younger man was attempting to park in a spot near the retention pond when the vehicle suddenly accelerated, went over some bushes, and into the pond. It then flipped on its roof and trapped the two men for an estimated 10 minutes in about four-to-eight feet of water, police said.
Although at least one witness and several Aurora Police Officers attempted to rescue the two men that were in the car, the men were only extricated after the Aurora Fire Department’s Dive Team arrived and were able to cut the seat belts and get the men out of the water.
Tamang was pronounced dead at 10:15 p.m. at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood. The 33-year-old relative who was reported to be driving at the time of the crash was taken to an Aurora hospital for treatment of his accident injuries, which were said to be critical injuries.
