Illinois Seat Belt Usage Campaign

Seat Belt Usage Campaign For Kane County And Illinois

On May 20, 2014, the Illinois Department Of Transportation (IDOT) issued a news release regarding the “Click It or Ticket” campaign.  The news release is titled “IDOT, ISP, Local Law Enforcement Encourage All Motorists To ‘Click It or Ticket” to Help Avoid Fatal Vehicle Crashes.”

A couple of notable excerpts from this news release include:

With the arrival of Memorial Day and the start of the summer travel season, at several events throughout the state, the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) today highlighted data showing the ages of individuals who have died unbelted in motor vehicle crashes in recent years. This data was stressed as a reminder to people of all ages as the Illinois State Police and over 500 local law enforcement agencies step up seat belt enforcement efforts heading into Memorial Day weekend as part of the “Click It or Ticket” campaign.

Starting today, and running through the holiday weekend, motorists will see hundreds of additional seat belt enforcement zones and other enforcement patrols looking for seat belt law violators and drunk drivers. This increased enforcement effort is part of the 2014 National Memorial Day Crackdown that started on May 9 in Illinois, and is intended to save lives by increasing seat belt use in Illinois and throughout the country.

also:

“Illinois State Police and law enforcement statewide will partner to enforce traffic laws so that the roads and motorists are safe. The highways will be busy and motorists and passengers are vulnerable when traffic laws are not followed,” said ISP Director Hiram Grau. “Police statewide will partner to enforce all traffic laws, but especially want the motoring public to remember to buckle up – that includes drivers and all passengers safely restrained inside the vehicle.”

This news release also discusses a variety of statistics regarding seat belt usage in Illinois, as well as the number of fatalities that have occurred over a multi-year period in accidents in which vehicle occupants did not use seat belts.

Air Bag Deployment Issues In GM Cars With Faulty Ignition Switches

Air Bag Deployment Issues

Various questions and concerns have arisen regarding the car accidents involving the GM cars (since recalled) that have GM’s defective ignition switches.

One of the many questions regarding car accidents involving GM’s faulty ignition switches is why the cars’ air bags failed to deploy in the 13 fatal accidents that are believed to have stemmed from the faulty ignition switches.

Newly released information may provide the answer to why the air bags failed to deploy, especially in instances in which one would certainly have expected them to deploy.

The May 13, 2014 foxnews.com article titled “GM recall reveals gaps in air bag knowledge” discusses various aspects of this air bag deployment issue.

An excerpt:

Here’s an unsettling fact about cars equipped with air bags: they don’t always deploy when drivers — or regulators — expect them to.

Thirteen people have died in crashes involving older GM cars with defective ignition switches. In each of those crashes, and in others in which occupants were injured, the air bags failed to deploy even after striking trees, guard rails or other objects.

Puzzled by these failures, federal safety regulators told Congress last month they believed the cars’ air bags should have worked for up to 60 seconds after the engine stalled. But GM has since told The Associated Press that regulators were mistaken: the cars only had enough reserve power to sense a crash and deploy the air bags for 150 milliseconds after the switch malfunctioned and cut off the car’s power.

Additional details and possible updates concerning this air bag deployment issue can be seen in a variety of media sources, including the foxnews.com article mentioned above, as well as the May 13 Washington Post article titled “Facts about air bags involved in GM recalls.”

Seat Belt Usage In Illinois

Seat Belt Usage And Statistics

Yesterday (May 9, 2014) IDOT issued a press release titled “Illinois Law Enforcement Out in Force to Remind Motorists to ‘Click It or Ticket.’”  This release discusses a variety of issues with regard to seat belt usage trends and associated fatal vehicle accident trends in Illinois.

An excerpt includes:

“Even with 9 out of 10 front-seat motorists buckling up in Illinois during the day, far too many people are still dying because they didn’t wear a seat belt, especially late at night,” said Illinois Transportation Secretary Ann L. Schneider. “IDOT, the Illinois State Police and hundreds of dedicated local police and sheriff’s departments are saying today that needs to change.”

The primary goal of “Click it or Ticket” is to get more people to buckle up during nighttime hours especially when other factors such as drunk driving play a large role in crashes.

Provisional data shows 1,339 passenger vehicle occupants killed in crashes were not wearing seat belts on Illinois roads from 2009 through 2013. Of those unbuckled fatalities occurring during these years, 650, or 49%, were killed during the 9 p.m. – 6 a.m. timeframe.

The news release also discusses various issues including the seat belt law in Illinois, and cites various statistics regarding seat belt use and Illinois traffic fatalities.
